History

Rani Birla Girls' College is one of the Premiere Women's Institute for higher education in Kolkata, affiliated to the University of Calcutta. With a rich history of 62 years of successful running, the college has crossed several hurdles in order to establish its place in the world of academics and has emerged as one of the best choices for girls in Kolkata to get a holistic education.

The college was founded in the memory of Rani Jogeswari Devi Birla and began its journey on 5th July 1961 under the Hindustan charitable Trust. The formal inauguration was held on 8th April, 1962 and the ceremony was attended by Mr. S.R DAS, the then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Mr. B.M. Birla, the Chairman of the Governing Body and Mrs. V. Clark, Administrator of The Modern High School. The College began functioning under the excellent management of the first Principal, Mrs. Kamala Dasgupta, a successful teacher of the Modern High School. Initially, the College had English, History, Political Science, Education, Hindi and Philosophy departments. Later on, keeping up with the times, Sociology and Geography were also introduced along with Communicative English, Journalism and Mass Communication and Fashion and Apparel Designing.

The Top floor of the Modern High School at 78 Syed Amir Ali Avenue housed the College for almost two decades, till 1979, when for the need of a bigger premises, it shifted to its present address at 38 Shakespeare Sarani, Kolkata -17.

A New Era of momentous changes began with 1997 as the College came under the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal in 1998. The journey of RBGC, as it came to be called fondly, began now as a Government Aided College. With new administration came new approaches and more modernist curriculum aimed at serving the rapidly changing student profile of the New Millennium. Sociology, Fashion and Apparel Designing, Journalism and Mass Communication were introduced as Full Courses along with Communicative English as Major. In this new journey, one of the first feathers in the cap was The NAAC Accreditation of 2009 followed by the same in 2015.

Almost half a century of consistent performance was the key point of pride for RBGC. The Golden Jubilee Celebration of the College in 2011 was an occasion of much joy and celebration. The successful Journey of Rani Birla Girls' College was put proudly forward by the staff and students of the Institute. The Inaugural Programme was held on 15th December 2010 and was graced by the august presence of the Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, Registrar of The University of Calcutta and other dignitaries. The Celebration continued till July 2011 within the College Premises with the help and support of the alumni and the staff of the College as well as the spontaneous performances put together by the then students. As the College approaches the 65th Year mark, the multifaceted tradition of the RBGC along with the spirit of making successful independent individuals continue with more grit and determination.
